I will now spend the next 7 hours looking at non-running MGB GTs around the internet for next year’s class. I guess I could also get a Classic Mini, although those might be more expensive.

LUCKY!! I have a ‘69 Sprite MKIV sitting in my storage unit because I have nowhere to finish its restoration.

I’ve always much preferred the GT to the converts!

If one had to do something old, British, a coupe, and more far affordable than an E-type, might I suggest a Triumph GT6 for consideration? At GT6 is superior to an MBG in every way, can still be found as a project affordably, and not every wanker in the local British car club has one.

Also, my first car was a ‘72 MGB GT, so I highly approve of your lead pic!

Wow, superior in every way is quite a claim. Having owned a couple of MGs, they are pretty unique, it would take a lot of convincing for me to believe you. Yes I know the TR6 had a bigger engine, but still... the MGB is iconic for a reason...

+1 for the GT6, especially if you find an MK1. They look like the teenage son of an Aston Martin and an E-Type Jag.

What kind of school? High school? College? Either way I’m moving to where you are cause I don’t think anything like that exists here in Cali.

An E-type is iconic. A Morgan is iconic, too. My experience was that MGBs are only iconic to the people who owned them. I learned to wrench from a guy who was an old British car mechanic. My beef with the MGB is that it would’ve been a fantastic 50's British sports car. The problem is that they built them in 60's and 70's, and they actually got worse as the model carried on. I love me a midget, and I respect the MGA (especially in twin-cam form). The MGB was like “awe, what the hell happened guys?”
The GT6 at least made nice sounds from that 6 as it accelerates slower than probably any new car sold in the US today. They look sexy, they make nice sounds, and they are properly fun on a twisty road. The GT6 got better as it carried on, and they sorted out the weird, but very fun, handling of the early cars. The GT6 even had a 12-volt negative earth electrical system.
While I’ll always lust for an E-type (and if you have the means, I highly recommend it), and even an XK120/140/150, my British car sensibilities really lie in Lotus. Give me an Elan, please. In fact, I’ll take two. I’ll even take the fun that is the funky looking Europa, and I would certainly take a Cortina.

I suppose what is iconic about them is how many people they reached in the US when the rest of the US market was moving quickly towards malaise sedans. I had a ‘72 MGB GT as my first car, it was a complete POS but I loved driving it.
The platform clearly became long in the tooth and MG’s lack of real updates ended up being the demise of MG, but that’s for a different discussion.

How about an MGB but with some modern twist.
Like the MGB Sebring here, it’s a 1971 MGB with a Ford 302 V8 engine.
or
MGB GT Sebring V8.(yes, I believe the bonnet is off an MGC)
